Today I discovered that the term for a group of mice is a “mischief”. Just like we say “herd of buffalo”, “gaggle of geese”, and “school of fish”, there are also specific terms for many other animals. Even at 24, there are so many words I did not know! And what fun words to know, too!
Today I fell through a hole
In a book
And found myself in a land
Where all the animals
Hung around in groups
In the lake,
A hedge of herons
Looked past the knot of toads
To hungrily eye
The hovers of trout swimming by.
Nearby
A romp of otters
Dallied in golden light
Of the setting sun
They seemed to be having so much fun!
A scurry of squirrels
Darted about the trees
While the parliament of owls
Slept with ease.
While the siege of crane
Did their pompous dance
A string of ponies
On the hill
Began to prance.
Then my eyes fell to rest
On a lone kangaroo
Where was its mob?
He turned and spoke to me,
“Hey, you’re alone too!”
The horde of animals
Looked up together
They saw at once
We didn’t belong
Kangaroo and I
Were kicked out of the book
Sent back to the lands
We’d come from
But as I lay in bed
And looked in the fishbowl
I wondered if I was hallucinating
Was it just my one goldfish there?
Or was it a troubling?

A rhumba of rattlesnakes - ew!
ReplyDeleteHowever, the murder of crows seems fitting. They are an onimous creatures most times!
I love the "parliament of owls". It just seems so fitting...
